French President Emmanuel Macron will pay a state visit to China January 8 -10. While the visit will be his first to China since becoming French president, he had met Chinese president Xi Jinping in July on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg. During that meeting, President Xi said the bilateral relationship had become ever more important and strategic and the two sides should work together to maintain and promote a comprehensive strategic partnership. How important are China-France ties given American isolationism and Germany’s political uncertainty? We turn to our panel to find out: Wang Yiwei, director of Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University; and Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, political commentator and columnist at the Telegraph and Weekly Standard.
